Wikipedia: Here. Facebook: Here.

Official Program Objective: "The Mandarin Training Center was founded in 1956 and is a government-recognized center for teaching Chinese as a foreign language and an extension program of the National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU). Since that time, it has grown to become the largest and best known institution in the Republic of China dedicated to the teaching of Chinese culture and Chinese as a second language. All levels of standard and Classical Chinese as well as Chinese culture are taught here."

Program Eligibility: Applicants should be high school graduates.

Program Duration: One may attend the "Summer Quarter", which is 8 weeks of classes between July and August.

Cost: 13 600 NT (regular). 19 200 NT (intensive).

Admission Difficulty: Satisfaction of all the admissions requirements (fees, VISA eligibility) should be sufficient for admission.

Repeat Participants? Yes.

The Low-Down: Not a summer "program" per se, NTNU is a popular summer destination for individuals who want to spend their summer in Taiwan in an organized fashion. Though many institutions offer Chinese-language programs, Shida is considered the gold standard by which all programs are compared. More than that, attending the school is generally viewed as a rite of passage for those who study Chinese in Taiwan for any duration, due to the large number of Chinese-language students that have passed through its doors. Your specific experience will vary depending on your classmates, your teacher(s), your living arrangements, and your desire for activities, but in general most students appear to have a memorable time regardless of their circumstances. This school tends to attract outgoing and personable individuals and you will meet many people from around the world with similar interests. Out of all the programs listed here, this program will allow you to improve your Chinese language ability the most.
